Creative Activities to Keep a Healthy Mind

Finding activities that fit the needs of all can keep individuals stimulated and benefit their well-being. Our Personal Care and Memory Care Communities strive to give residents an opportunity to participate in creative and comforting activities.

Trying a handful of things to do in the pastime is a simple, effective way to learn what works best for everyone. Some ways to get creative include:

Art therapy
Painting, coloring, and making a collage, among other arts and crafts, are some of the most enjoyable types of art therapy. Such activities allow self-expression and the release of positive emotions.

Art therapy can be especially helpful for individuals living in our Memory Care Community. Communication abilities, social skills, and mobility can be enhanced. For those who tend to be non-verbal, engaging in this activity can bring out smiles and laughter.

Such benefits can be seen immediately while engaging in art therapy. No matter the state of any individual, consider their current abilities. Considering their preferences can set them up for enjoyment.

Complete a puzzle
Like art therapy, puzzles are a great way to relax and feel accomplished. Putting together the pieces gives a loved one a sense of control.

Creating custom puzzles, such as one featuring a photo of family or friends, is also beneficial for memory skills. Recalling details about when and where the photo was taken and who is in it can help improve thought processes and mental speed.

Create a memory box
Feeling connected is essential for all loved ones. Creating a memory box and filling it with pieces of their past or current interests is a sensory activity that can be continuously added to and reflected on.

Creating and exploring the memory box is also a way to bond. Being surrounded by family and friends shows that they are acknowledged and appreciated. By no means does it have to be something elaborate. Start with an old jewelry box, plastic container, or shoebox.

Photographs are commonly included. Seeing familiar faces can keep a loved one’s memory fresh or jog it if needed. Other types of memorabilia, such as letters, souvenirs, and CDs, can be added.

Listen to music
Listening to music is uplifting. In addition to being another enjoyable activity, studies have revealed that music improves moods. Singing along to favorite tunes can do the same.

Participating in dance programs or dancing on one’s own time is another way to incorporate music as a creative, stimulating activity. Attention, concentration, and mobile skills are positively affected by dancing.

Animal therapy
Interacting with animals can decrease stress levels, lower blood pressure, and elevate moods. Engaging with animals as a sensory activity promotes well-being if a loved one feels comfortable.

For example, feeling the texture or watching the movement of an animal can be externally stimulating for a loved one. Participating in this can be very relaxing.

Our communities provide a safe environment with simple activities that bring out creativity within residents. Visit the Personal Care and Memory Care website to learn more about what each community offers.
